How to make a recycled bread bag?

Cloth bread bags had a host of advantages over the paper or plastic ones we use now. Paper bags are quite uncomfortable and if we do not hold the loaf of bread in the center, but simply grab the container, we run the risk that it will break at the bottom and the product will end up on the floor before reaching home. As for the plastic bags, they soften the bread and take away that crunchiness that the freshly made product must have.

Our grandmothers went to buy bread in cotton cloth bags that perfectly preserved the product with all its properties and we should regain that custom. When you get home, the bread can be stored in the bag or in a classic bread basket, which are also the best way for the food to stay fresh for longer.

But how to make a bread bag in a simple way and using recycled material? Well, it’s very easy, you can use a plain pillowcase from a bedding set that you no longer have in use. Sometimes, we have to get rid of a 100% cotton bedding set because it has been torn or damaged when we washed it, but the cushion is in perfect condition.

All you have to do is cut all the excess fabric, since a loaf of bread can measure between 50 and 60 cm. We must leave a little more for the closing and that’s it. Once the cover is cut, we will make a hem at the top to be able to insert a cotton cord with which to make a gathering and close the bag. We sew the hem by machine and then we put the cord on it.

To finish, we sew the lower part to give the bag a finish and we will have a 100% cotton bag perfect for everyday bread. If we want to decorate it and we have a hand for embroidery, with the machine we can embroider a central detail that gives it a little color and grace, even if it is only the word PAN in a tone that contrasts with the color of the bag.

This bread bag is totally eco-friendly and can last for a long time. You can wash it in the washing machine and it will always keep its properties.
